FC Barcelona is already waiting for Atlético de Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League after knocking down Newcastle in the second leg of the round of 16. Hansi Flick’s men beat the magpies Thanks for an overwhelming start to the second part. The toll to pay is muscle injuries of Eric García and Joan García.
seven years latera Champions League tie returned to a Camp Nou with fans in the stands—since that 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in 2019—.
The first time was a genuine fight between two fighters who did not raise their fists to assert their guard. Exchanges of goals from both sides at times turned the match and the tie to each of the two sides.
The first to impact was Barça, in the 6th minute, through Raphinha. The Brazilian took advantage of up to two slips by English players and a differential pass from Fermín in the area.
A Newcastle that had a hard time overcoming the Blaugrana pressure found the tie to the surprise of many in a great counterattack. Elanga was the scorer when he caught Joan García on the wrong foot (min. 15).
After three minutes, Barça got up from the canvas to throw another shot directly into the faces of the British. He did it through a rehearsed play, from a set piece. Raphinha put it in the area, Gerard Martín put it to sleep with his head and Bernal put it into the visitors’ goal (18′).
When Flick’s men were at their best, an untimely injury to Eric García made the culés move the bench to bring on Araújo.
The change preceded Newcastle’s tie, again, by Elanga (min. 28) and the best minutes of the English. Fifteen minutes of visitor threat in which Barça knew how to resist and regain freshness thanks to two very clear chances, one for Lewandowski (40′) and another for Lamine (46′).
The man who was the scorer of the only Blaugrana goal in the first leg, repeated his success from the penalty spot to send his team ahead at half-time (min 48′). The maximum penalty had to be indicated by the VAR in injury time due to Trippier grabbing Raphinha.
Newcastle falls to the canvas in the second half
In an overwhelming start to the second half by Barça, the locals sent their rival to the canvas. The fighting Newcastle could no longer get up.
Up to four goals were added to the scoreboard in less than half an hour. Fermín (51′), Raphinha (72′) and Lewandowski twice (56′ and 61′) executed the English.
The worst news for the culés, without a doubt, has been the injuries. To Eric’s in the first part we had to add that of Joan García ten minutes before the conclusion. Both will almost certainly miss the alleged call-up with the Spanish team for the penultimate list before the World Cup.
