The danish Jonas Vingegaard is the new leader after his victory on the previous day with a final in Uchonlaunching an attack a kilometer and a half from the finish line, which left the Red Bull riders who had accompanied him until that moment stranded, Tim Van Dyke y Daniel Felipe Martínez. The stage was a test not only because of the toughness of its route, but also because of the fall that cost Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who had taken the lead after the team time trial in stage 3, the abandonment.

The fifth of Paris-Nice 2026 is a stage reminiscent of the classic ones in the Ardennes. The key will be in the placement before entering Saint-Jean-de-Muzols: Entering in a bad position on a 16% ramp means saying goodbye to any chance of winning or maintaining the lead.
At more than 200 km, it is the longest day so far. The accumulation of second and third category climbs, plus a first-class ramp, will generate brutal wear and tear before the end. The first 150 km involve approach terrain with two 3rd elevations (Lentilly and Trèves), which could give rise to the first escape. They will be the appetizer to a tough finish, with a climb of just over 3 km at 7% to the Côte de Sécheras, to then give rise to the ‘wall’ of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols: located at km 186.4, it is only 2.2 km but an average of 11% and with ramps 16%is the perfect place for explosive riders with chances in the general classification to launch a serious attack to break the peloton.
The arrival is not flat. The last kilometers include the Coast of Saint-Barthélemy-le-Plain (3.2 km at 7.6%) that crowns just 9 km from the finish line. The subsequent descent is short and technical, leaving just a couple of flat kilometers before the finish line.
