He Arsenal scratched a valuable draw in Leverkusen in the first leg of the round of 16 of this Champions League. A draw, however, that came in a somewhat controversial way. Havertz equalized in the 90th minute from eleven meters after a rigorous penalty by Tillman on Madueke. The American player from Bayer Leverkusen very lightly blocked Madueke from behind before the English winger fell inside the area.

Halil Umut Meler, the Turkish referee who directed the match, did not hesitate to point out the maximum penalty in the field. But what was surprising was not that. The play was reviewed in the VAR, but The Turk was not even notified from the VOR room to go check the play to the monitor.

Resignation in the local team

Both Andrich, captain of the German team, and Kasper Hjulmand, showed their discontent with Meler’s decision at the end of the match: “EArsenal’s goal was not a penalty. They are a great team, but my boys had done their homework perfectly. We were superior. We play better“said the Danish coach.
