Bam Adebayo, center of the Miami Heat, scored 83 points this Tuesday in his team’s 150-129 victory against the Washington Wizards and surpassed Kobe Bryant’s 81 points to sign the second best scoring performance in NBA history.
Adebayo, 28 years old and in his ninth season with the Miami Heatleft behind Bryant’s stratospheric mark of 2006 against the Toronto Raptors and is only ahead of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 in 1962 with Philadelphia against the New York Knicks.
Adebayo retired with 1.08 minutes left with 20 of 43 field goals7 of 22 in triples and 36 of 43 from the free throw line in 41.49 minutes on the court.
“Thanks to God, my family, my teammates and these fans. They are like my second family, I couldn’t do it without them, thanks to the ‘coach’ to draw plays for me“said Adebayo, very excited and surrounded by his teammates at the end of this historic match.
Adebayo assured that he began to see this feat possible when He had 43 points at halftime and he did not hesitate to put this match at number one of the best of his career.
His name is already on the Olympus of the NBA, along with Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant.
“They are the greatest ever,” said Adebayo, who had his mother and his girlfriend, fellow player A’Ja Wilson, present at the Kaseya Center on the sweetest night of his life.
A first half of 43 points
It ended with chants of ‘MVP’but it started with an amazing first period, in which Adebayo made ten of his 16 field goals and five three-pointers in twelve minutes.
If he didn’t have more than 43 points at the halfway point of the game, it was because he got stuck with the triple in the second quarter, when he missed all three of his attempts. Despite that, he added twelve points to his tally.
The Heat were in charge 76-62 and the victory was no longer in doubt after the breakwhen Adebayo sealed another 19 points to shoot his tally up to 62.
Miami was up 113-97 and, in a Kaseya Center that was already dreaming of the feat, Erick Spoelstra kept his center on the field, with all his teammates playing for him.
A surreal ending
A surreal final few minutes then opened, in which the Wizards defense could not find any response to contain Adebayo. What’s more, his aggressiveness served to stop the clock and repeatedly send the center to the free-kick line.
Adebayo took up to 16 free kicks in the last segment and scored fourteen of them. He also attempted six times from beyond the arc, connecting on just one three-pointer.
The points that left behind the mark of Kobe came from the free line and, with 1.08 left to play, Spoelstra took Adebayo off the court, applauded by the public and hugged by his teammates.
It was, obviously, a scoring record for the Miami franchise and the best performance of the season. Until this moment, the Serbian Nikola Jokic was the one who had scored the most points this season, with 56 on the last Christmas day.
More than 20 years after Bryant’s unforgettable night against the Raptors, Adebayo rewrote NBA history and now only has Wilt Chamberlain ahead of him.
