UEFA has announced that “no alternative venue is being considered” for the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina scheduled in Lusail (Qatar) on March 27 due to the situation generated by the war conflict in Iran and that the final decision will be made at the end of next week.
UEFA indicated that talks are being held with the Qatari organizers, of whom it valued the “enormous effort” they are making to make “the match a success,” sources from the highest European football organizations pointed out. “We are aware of the speculation surrounding the Finalissima, given the situation in the region (…) At the moment, no alternative venue is being considered,” UEFA noted in relation to the stadium that will host the duel between the European and American champions.
Qatar suspended all competitions
The military intervention launched by the United States and Israel against Iran last Saturday and the response of the Tehran regime with bombings against points in neighboring countries, including Qatar, fueled the debate about the possible change of party headquarters. The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced on Sunday the postponement of all tournaments and competitions due to instability in the area until further announcement, but without mentioning the match between Spain and Argentina.
UEFA, Conmebol and FIFA remain in contact with the Qatari authorities in order to make a final decision. In addition to the official match, some friendlies are scheduled in the emirate, such as Qatar-Argentina on March 31 or Spain-Egypt a day before.
The Spanish coach, Luis de la Fuente, stated last Monday that the best thing would be to “find a new headquarters” in view of the instability created in the Middle East.
