The meeting between Sporting Gijón y Leganes This Sunday, corresponding to matchday 28 of the Second Division, was suspended due to the death of a fan of the Asturian team in the southeastern stands of the stadium. The Molinón which forced the match to be stopped.

The fan, an 82 year old man and a member of the club for 40 years, died after being treated for more than half an hour by emergency medical services, official sources reported.

Through a statement, Sporting mourned the death of the fan, sent his “support and affection to family and friends”, and thanked “the work of all the health and security personnel today in El Molinón, and the exemplary behavior, at all times, of both fans.”

The man, who goes by the initials CRG, had come to the meeting with his nietowhich also needed medical assistance when suffering an anxiety attack due to what happened.

3 minutes had been disputed

The match was stopped three minutes after it began when the goalkeeper and captain of Leganés, Juan Sorianonotified the referee of the incident in the stands after being warned by the fans, which activated the corresponding security protocol, announcing the momentary suspension of the match over the public address system.

After a quarter of an hour’s break on the pitch, finally the referee, Daniel Palencia Caballeroinformed the captains of both teams that they had to retire to the locker rooms and, minutes later, the final suspension of the match and the need to evacuate the stands was announced over the loudspeaker.

LaLiga announced hours later the new date and time of the match. It will be on Monday, March 2 at 8 p.m.
