In the past, these two teams fought for Champions League positions and competed head-to-head in Europe.

The triumph has given wings to the cheswhich are seven points away from relegation (35) and has left the Andalusians very affected, who are already looking askance at the relegation pit, from which they are only three points away. And the pitcher goes to the fountain so much that it ends up breaking. Sevilla has been playing with fire for several seasons, and last time it had serious problems and was just one point away from relegation, which Leganés scored with 40 points.

But the problem of the most successful team in the Europa League does not come from now. Since the beginning of this decade, institutional instability has been a constant the war of the Del Nido -father and son-. This first, the club’s largest individual shareholder, has been trying to regain control of it since 2019.

His son has been the highest institutional representative of Sevilla since 2023, when he took over, precisely, from Del Nido’s successor, José Castro, who took over the reins of the club in 2013 after his resignation, after having been sentenced to a seven-year prison sentence for corruption in the Minutas case, related to the Marbella City Council.

Economic problems

Sevilla’s sporting problems are unequivocally accompanied by economic problems. The club’s official debt aims for around 88 million euros by December 2025when the balance of the accounts for the 2024/25 campaign was also presented, with a negative balance of 54 million euros.

Furthermore, at that December Meeting, Del Nido Jr. presented to the shareholders an extension of the loan they have with Goldman Sachs of 70 millionwhich join the 108 that had already been granted. An amount to try to ensure the financial stability of the club with the second lowest salary limit in the First Division (22.1), only Levante has a lower budget (17.1), and contrasts with the 19.8 of Leganés, a Second Division team.

A turbulent situation within the offices and at a financial level that has been directly reflected on the playing field. In recent years, the value of the Sevilla squad has gone from more than 400 million euros to the little more than 140 that it has now.

At the end of the year, Sergio Ramos began to negotiate with the current board of directors to buy the club where it was born with the contribution of an American partner, Fiva Eleven Capital, for around 450 million euros, including debt.

From the golden age to the darkest times

The Andalusian team, in its golden era in the Europa League, which began in the mid-2000s and concluded with its epilogue against Mourinho’s Roma in 2023 with the conquest of its seventh title in this competition, had always been characterized by its good eye for signings, the result of a marriage that for years worked like a charm, with Monchi in the position of sporting director at different stages.

Sevilla exported talent to other teams by signing well and at a moderate price and then projecting players, either from the quarry, such as Navas or Kingsor thanks to the good eye of his sports director, with names like those of Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic or a more recent case like that of Koundé or Bono.

The same case, but in reverse, has occurred on the bench of the Nervión team. From having coaches like Joaquín Caparrós, Juan de Ramos -with his two UEFAS- or Unai Emery -who achieved three consecutive Europa Leagues (2014, 2015 and 2016), Julen Lopetegui’s 2020 or the most recent Mendilíbar in 2023, the latter a small oasis in the journey through the desert that one of the teams with the most history in the League is going through, let’s see the vacant position.

Precisely, that 2022/23 season was the beginning of the end of a glorious cycle that began with a frenetic season on the bench. After having won the Europa League in his first year on the Sevilla bench (19/20), Julen Lopetegui He removed Real Madrid’s thorn by leading the Andalusians to win their sixth Europa League.

Eight coaches in four seasons

The Basque coach starred in the last stage of stability on the Sevilla bench. The year of his debut, in addition to the European title against Inter Milan, left the team fourth in the League. In the following campaign he achieved the milestone of leading the people of Seville up to the record number of 77 pointsnever achieved before in its history, and finishes fourth again.

But the cycle came to an end in 22/23, when Lopetegui was dismissed after being defeated 1-4 in the old Champions League group stage against Borussia and he did not eat his grapes on the bench. From the board, an old acquaintance of the Sevilla fans is elected, Jorge Sampaoli, who barely lasts five months in office. He is dismissed in March for having the team in relegation.

That’s when Mendilíbar takes charge of the team and restores hope to a Sevillismo that was already beginning to glimpse the shadows, thanks to the unexpected achievement of the seventh Europa League in its history. He also managed to save Sevilla from the bottom zone and left them with 49 points, far from Europe and safely away from the losing places in the category.

The honeymoon between Sevilla and Mendilíbar does not last long, at the beginning of the 23/24 campaign he is dismissed due to poor results and the Uruguayan Diego Alonso takes over, but the results are not good either and he is fired two months later after not being able to win a single game of the 12 he played between the League -8- and the Champions League -4-. The one chosen to save the team that year was another old acquaintance, Quique Sánchez Flores. Sevilla finished fourteenth, with only 41 points.

García Pimienta was the one chosen to take the risk of redirecting a team that was plummeting season after season. The new Sevilla coach, with little experience in the elite, was dismissed in April of last year and It was Joaquín Caparrós, legend of Sevillismothe one who took responsibility for saving those from Nervión from disaster. Last season they were just one point away from relegation, harvesting the same number as the previous one (41 points), after losing the last two league games.

The last sacrifice in this long list, which began with Lopetegui’s goodbye in October 22, was Matías Almeyda, signed last summer to resurrect a project that is failing: eight coaches in four seasons looking into the abyss.

[3

post-916","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sport-2
["GET
