The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an investigation after the Islamophobic and xenophobic chants<\/strong> during the friendly football match between the Spanish and Egyptian national teams at the RCDE Stadium in Cornell\u00e0-El Prat (Barcelona) in front of 35,895 spectators.<\/p>\n From an area at the back of Cornell\u00e0, where the so-called ‘La Curva’ of RCD Espanyol is usually located, the chant “Muslim he who does not bounce<\/strong>“, in a offensive conduct <\/strong>which tarnished the festive atmosphere that existed in the venue.<\/p>\n During the break, the message on the stadium video scoreboard recalled that “the legislation for the prevention of violence in sport prohibits and sanctions active participation in violent, xenophobic, homophobic or racist acts<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n Furthermore, during the run-up to the meeting, part of the public whistled the Egyptian anthem<\/strong>while insults were also heard directed at the President of the Government, Pedro S\u00e1nchez, from a small group of fans. <\/p>\n As a result of these Islamophobic chants, the General Information Commissariat of the Mossos d’Esquadra has opened a criminal investigation and is working in coordination with the Hate and Discrimination Prosecutor’s Office<\/strong>which is in charge of determining whether the events may constitute a hate crime, as sources from the Catalan police have informed EFE.<\/p>\n Within the framework of this investigation, the Mossos will deal, among other issues, with identify the people who instigated the Islamophobic proclamations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If the criminal procedure is not successful, the Mossos will analyze a possible action in the administrative field, in application of Law 18\/2007 against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport, which sanctions the behavior of spectators at sporting events.<\/p>\n The Minister of Sports of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Berni \u00c1lvarez, has expressed his “deep indignation” at the racist chants and has regretted the delay in activating the protocols.
